Sophie Thorne Counselling Brighton and Hove

How is counselling different from talking to a friend?

Friends and family, however well-meaning, may try to give advice or to reassure you. You may have mixed feelings about those you are close to, perhaps feeling angry with them, fearing you will burden them with your worries or that they will judge you if they find out how you really think and feel. Because counselling is outside of your other relationships, it provides a safe, neutral and confidential space in which to explore all of yourself without feeling judged.

What is Psychodynamic Counselling?

The ways we feel about ourselves, others and the world are rooted in our early experiences and relationships. When an aspect of these experiences and relationships seems too difficult to be consciously aware of, it may be defended against in various ways and pushed into the unconscious. Defending against painful feelings or memories may cause us to feel, think and act in particular ways which make us feel unhappy and confused. The purpose of psychodynamic therapy is to bring the unconscious mind into consciousness, allowing you to explore, experience and understand your true feelings within the context of the counselling relationship; working with a counsellor in this process can help you improve the quality of your life and relationships.

Will you give me advice?

No - counselling is not about being told what to do or how to feel. We will explore your feelings and thoughts to allow you to make your own decisions about how to move forward.

Is counselling right for me?

You may be uncertain about what counselling will involve. Because I understand this, and I believe that a good client/counsellor relationship is the key to working together, I offer a 40 minute introductory appointment at a cost of only £30. This gives me a a chance to find out a bit more about you and for you to ask me any questions you may have about counselling. You are not under any obligation to commit to counselling with me at the end of this session and are welcome to take time to make up your mind.

How much does it cost?

Sessions are weekly and last 50 minutes:

Initial appointment session: £30
Ongoing weekly sessions: £50 -£55

I am sometimes able to offer a small number of concessionary rates to those who would otherwise be unable to attend counselling - please discuss this with me at the initial appointment
